South Africa ranks high in the world as far as sunshine days are concerned. Summer is from November until March and temperatures average between 15° - 40°C. Despite regional differences, South Africa’s climate is generally mild throughout the year. Snowfall is limited to the highest mountain peaks during winter. South Africa is on the whole a dry country with a mean annual rainfall of 502mm.
KwaZulu Natal has a mostly sub-tropical climate with high humidity in summer.
The Johannesburg and southern Gauteng region has hot summers, whose afternoons are regularly punctuated by powerful electric storms and warm, dry sunny winter weather with cold frosty mornings. Johannesburg enjoys a very favourable climate, dry and sunny all year round. Between October and April the city experiences heavy afternoon thunderstorms with downpours of rain that disappear as quickly as they arrive. Winter days are only slightly cooler than the pleasant summer average temperatures, but it can become frosty on winter nights.
Mpumalanga (incl. Kruger National Park) The climate is sub tropical with summer rains, winter days are normally sunny, warm and clear with little likelihood of rain. Winter is the ideal game viewing time as visibility is at its best with many leafless trees and shorter dry grass.
The Western Cape has a Mediterranian climate with warm, dry summers and cool wet winters. However the Garden Route’s lowest rainfall occurs during June & July, and generally it has a temperate climate throughout the year. Cape Town, on the Cape Peninsula, has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters. Seasons are well defined, with winter, between May and August, being influenced by a series of cold fronts that cross the Peninsula from the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are characterised by heavy rain, particularly on the mountain slopes, strong north-westerly winds, and low temperatures. In summer the weather in Cape Town is warm and dry, but the idyllic sunny weather is often punctuated with strong south easterly winds.
